Fr. Ken, also known as “Fr. Pick-a-Word,” loved to tell the story of the missing brick in the church wall. This parable stemmed from Fr. Ken asking a little boy to pick a word from the mass readings during a parish school mass. The boy exclaimed “Hole!” Nonplused, Fr. Ken immediately developed a teaching around ‘holes’ in the church building, and about the importance of all the bricks being present in the church wall. The missing bricks were a metaphor for all the missing Catholics who were no longer attending mass. This homily profoundly impacted this child, and he successfully brought his fallen away parents back to mass, and the boy’s dad eventually became a deacon!
